Round or ‘Shaped,’ Implants Yield Good Results in Breast Reconstruction, Reports Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Breast Augmentation

For women undergoing breast reconstruction using implants, most patient-reported outcomes are similar with two different shapes of silicone gel-filled implants, reports a study in the March issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Assessment of key areas of quality of life after breast reconstruction shows few significant differences with conventional round implants versus newer “shaped” implants, according to the new research, led by Dr. Sheina A. Macadam of University of British Columbia, Vancouver.

Achieving New Year’s Goals

The New Year often brings with it resolutions aimed at getting back into shape. Although some may start out ambitiously, following through on the promise to lose weight or get toned is often easier said then done. However, according to the Louisiana-based paper The News Star, there are a number of ways to get a svelte physique this year.

Dieting and exercise are the most natural body-contouring option, but experts say it is important to get healthy smartly. For instance, losing a great deal of weight quickly can be unhealthy, as can over-exercising. Doctors advocate losing no more than 1 to 2 pounds per week.

Though weight loss can be achieved through diet and exercise, cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and tummy tucks can combat certain problem areas resistant to diet & exercise.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, although liposuction can help improve one’s figure, the results may vanish if the patient gains weight afterward, or does not maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Sagging breasts…it’s one of the inevitable changes that happens to our bodies that almost all women experience. It’s caused by weight gain or loss, breastfeeding, pregnancy, vigorous exercise and the list just goes on. A breastlift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. The procedure can also reduce the size of the areola. Breast implants inserted in conjunction with a mastopexy procedure can increase both firmness and size.

Combined Breast Lift and Augmentation Is Safe, Suggests Study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgery Reconstructive Plastic Surgery

Breast lift surgery and breast augmentation with implants can safely be performed in a single procedure, according to a report in the January issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

“With appropriate patient selection and a carefully planned operative approach, our data demonstrates a one-stage procedure can be safely performed with acceptable complication and reoperation rates,” concludes the study by ASPS Member Surgeon Michael Bradley Calobrace, MD, of Louisville, Ky., and colleagues.

A new survey released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows 89 percent of women want to see what breast reconstruction surgery results would look like before undergoing treatment for breast cancer, prompting the world’s largest group of board-certified plastic surgeons to launch a landmark show-and-tell event as part of Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day USA, October 17, 2012 in New Orleans.

The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, also found:

  • Less than a quarter (23%) of women know the wide range of breast reconstruction options available.
  • Only 22% of women are familiar with the quality of outcomes that can be expected.
  • Only 19% of women understand that the timing of their treatment for breast cancer and the timing of their decision to undergo reconstruction greatly impacts their options and results.
