“Linda is the perfect example of taking control of the diagnosis,” says Dr. Samra. “We created a reconstruction plan that was aggressive, but perfect for how she lives her life. It was important to her to get back to work as soon as possible and we did everything we could to safely support her wishes.”
The theme was Samra Plastic Surgery: Head to Toe. It was an opportunity to review new techniques in plastic surgery and discuss how physicians can partner with us to provide the best patient care available!

Dr. Said Samra and Dr. Salem Samra just returned from a one-week medical mission in Amman, Jordan to provide surgical treatment to Syrian refugees in need. In coordination with the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), Dr. Said and Dr. Salem hand-delivered approximately $100,000 in medical aid and equipment to a local charity hospital treating Syrian refugees in Jordan. This included a dermatome and mesher (skin grafting instruments), negative pressure wound therapy supplies (wound VAC supplies), and acellular dermal matrices (tissue-engineered biological grafts).
After the initial day screening patients, they operated everyday, performing 34 procedures on 15 patients. The patients ranged in age from small children to adults and presented with war wounds, burns, hand, and facial injuries. Surgeries included lower extremity reconstruction, reconstruction of facial deformities, complex flap closure of pressure ulceration, tendon transfer, contracture release with skin grafting, and nerve reconstruction with nerve grafting among others.
The doctors are grateful to SAMS and the Jordanian authorities for allowing them to contribute to the care of a people in desperate need. Given the magnitude of the crisis, their efforts only scratch the surface of need for plastic surgery among Syria’s injured and displaced. However the doctors are hopeful that they will be able to serve in future missions, and optimistic that their work may inspire others to help.
After all you’ve done for your children and family, after all the sleepless nights and endless stress it’s time for you take time out for yourself. To get YOU back. Mommy-makeovers refer to a host of different procedures that can help give you back your pre-maternity jeans bod. Board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Said A. Samra, Dr. Asaad H. Samra, Dr. Munjal P. Patel and Dr. Salem Samra comprise Samra Plastic Surgery with offices in Holmdel and Old Bridge. Our plastic surgeons very commonly see women coming in requesting things to be nipped and tucked to turn back the hands of time and undo the havoc of pregnancy. Among the popular procedures for these women, are tummy-tuck (or abdominoplasty), breast lift (with or without implants) and liposuction.
“Few things can make as much impact on a person’s life as a tummy-tuck can.”, says Dr. Asaad H. Samra, ”We are directly targeting the skin and fat of the abdomen that is resistant to diet and exercise. It’s simply an area that they can’t make better themselves.” A tummy-tuck refers to a surgery in which the lower abdominal skin and fat are removed, the “six-pack” muscles are tightened to bring in the waist, and the remaining skin “tucked” to give back those svelte curves. The procedure typically takes about two hours under general anesthesia, and the patient goes home the same day.
A breast lift repositions the nipple and areola higher on the breast mound. It can be done with or without implants depending on whether or not more volume or fullness of the breast is desired. A breast lift takes approximately an hour and a half under general anesthesia and is also an outpatient procedure. When done in conjunction with implants, the implant is usually placed under the pectoral muscle and can be filled with either saline or silicone.
Liposuction describes a surgery in which unwanted fat is literally sucked out from stab incisions. Liposuction can be done with or without an energy source to treat the fat before removing it. Laser-assisted liposuction, as an example, uses laser to melt fat and encourage skin-tightening. Once the laser has been used then the treated fat is suctioned out as in traditional liposuction. A compression garment (or girdle) is commonly used for at least two weeks to help control swelling and bruising, and helps speed up getting your final result.
These procedures can be done alone or in combination. “We commonly combine a breast lift with a tummy-tuck. That way there is only one recovery period.”, says Dr. Samra. Prospective patients need to be evaluated during a consultation to make sure these surgeries are appropriate for them. Also, occasionally candidates are asked to see their primary care doctor to make sure it is safe for them to have the surgery, medically cleared.
For those not ready to take the plunge into the operating room, there are non-surgical options available for facial and body concerns. Botox is still is one of the most commonly performed procedures to date and is used to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles typically around the eyes and upper face. Additionally, Ultherapy is an FDA-approved treatment to lift in the face and neck using ultrasound energy. Hate that muffin-top and extra-love handles? Well, now we can actually painlessly melt that fat. Vanquish is new radiofrequency device that selectively heats up fat cells causing permanent reduction. “Patients typically need at least 4 treatments done once a week.”, says Dr. Samra, “The feedback and results that we are receiving from our patients is nothing short of great. Now, Vanquish isn’t for everybody so make sure you have a consultation with your surgeon.”

According to a new report from TIME, cosmetic procedures soar at this time of year, and the “gifting” of plastic surgery is reportedly a rising holiday season trend.
According to plastic surgeons cited in an ABC News report, the gifting of cosmetic surgery is up 20% to 35%, depending on the procedure and practice. Likewise, an Elle.com post called on plastic surgeons reporting that sales of gift cards—often for $150 to $200, which cover low-cost procedures like medical-grade peels—have undergone a “dramatic increase.”
The International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery released an infographic on international cosmetic procedures performed in 2011. The results may surprise those who believe that plastic surgery is ubiquitous in the US.
While the US has seen an increase in plastic surgery in recent years, the countries that have the highest rate of cosmetic surgery procedures per 1,000 people were Italy, Greece and South Korea.
