Neck Lift

What is a Neck Lift?

Case #8101

The effects of aging do not discriminate, and signs of aging continuously march across our face and body whether we want them to or not. This is especially true for the skin and tissue in and around the neck. Many of our patients request the neck lift to rejuvenate and restore a youthful appearance around the entire neck region by surgically tightening as well as removing excess skin and tissue. The neck lift can often be the perfect complement to other procedures like a facelift, as people do not want their neck to be a giveaway of their true age.

It’s not just aging that affects the appearance of your neck. Factors like weight gain, weight loss, stress, gravity, and genetics can all play a factor with the appearance of your neck. Fortunately, at Samra Plastic Surgery, a neck lift is a great way to restore and rejuvenate your youthful beauty and improve your self-esteem.

What are the benefits of a Neck Lift?

The neck lift can provide significant aesthetic benefits. It can help restore a more youthful appearance to the neck region. Moreover, in our practice, we emphasize balance and harmony when it comes to aesthetic surgery. It is important to consider how the neck relates to the lower portion of the face and jawline. If the neck skin begins to sag, it can impact the appearance of these other areas of the face. An aging neck can detract from the overall beauty of the face and can draw unwanted attention. Therefore, neck lifting also involves bringing the aesthetics of the neck in line with that of the face. Specifically, the neck lift can help to:

  • Tighten the jawline
  • Reduce the appearance of jowls
  • Remove wrinkles on the neck
  • Reduce the appearance of harsh vertical neck bands
  • Eliminate a double chin due to excess fat
  • Enhance the contours of the neck

Am I a good candidate for a Neck Lift?

In general, good candidates for neck lift are those seeking rejuvenation of the neck region and want to address one or more of their following concerns:

  • Ill-defined jawline
  • Appearance of sagging in the jaw region (jowls)
  • Loose, hanging skin and wrinkling in the neck
  • Heavy vertical bands in the neck due to hyperactive muscles
  • Excess fat under the chin (a double chin effect)
  • Loss of youthful contour of the neck

While age is not a limiting criteria, most good candidates for neck lift are between the ages of 50 and 70 years. They should be healthy enough to undergo surgery and anesthesia. Their blood pressure should be well-controlled and they should not be on blood thinning medications in and around the time of surgery, in order to lessen risk of bleeding. They should either be nonsmoking or should be willing to quit smoking for several weeks before and after surgery. Also, as with any surgery, good candidates should have realistic expectations of the surgical outcome.

How is a Neck Lift performed?

A neck lift is typically performed as an outpatient procedure in an operating room under general anesthesia. It is often done in conjunction with a facelift surgery. A traditional neck lift is performed by making small incisions around and behind the ears extending into the scalp and one very small incision under the chin. Our surgeons take great care in proper placement of the incisions to allow post-surgical marks to be as inconspicuous as possible. During the procedure, excess fat in the neck is removed and the remaining fat is sculpted so that the neck has a smooth and even appearance. Liposuction is often used to aid with fat removal and contouring. The small incision under the chin helps to optimally address fat removal in this area and provides access to the vertical neck bands, which may trimmed, repositioned, or tightened as needed in order to reduce their appearance. Excess sagging skin is then excised, and the remaining skin is pulled around the neck to tighten and enhance the appearance of the neck contours and to give the neck a smoother and more youthful appearance. The incisions are carefully closed in layers with stitches. A temporary drain may be placed under the skin and is typically removed the next day. A compressive dressing is placed to optimally support the chin and neck postoperatively.

Immediately after surgery, patients are brought to the recovery room, where they rest for a couple of hours, as the anesthetic effects wear off. Our neck lift patients are generally able to return home on the same day accompanied by a family member or friend.

What is the Neck Lift recovery like?

As a neck lift is a fairly intensive procedure, it is important that you set aside the time to allow yourself to properly heal. You can expect to experience some soreness, tightness, swelling, and bruising during the first few days of your recovery. Medication can be provided to minimize discomfort. A compression garment will need to be worn during the recovery period to aid with the healing process. Most normal activities can usually be resumed within 10 to 14 days. However, strenuous activities will need to be avoided for four to six weeks after surgery. Our surgeons schedule regular follow-up visits to monitor your recovery and to confirm that goals for your healing are met.

What will the scar look like?

While a scar is generated from any incision placed on the body, our surgeons are very committed to minimizing scar appearance following neck lift surgery by careful placement of the incisions behind the ears and within the scalp, avoiding excess tension during surgical closure, and providing guidance to our patients on an optimal postoperative scar care regimen.

Are there good non-surgical options for neck lifting?

There are some non-surgical treatments to help rejuvenate the neck. These include Coolsculpting (fat-freezing technology) to reduce fat under the chin and jawline, Ultherapy (using ultrasound technology) to tighten and lift tissues of the lower face and neck, as well as Botox injections to address tight vertical bands in the neck due to hyperactive muscles. Also liposuction alone, without the other elements of the surgical neck lift, can be used to address excess fat deposits under the chin and jawline. However, for most people who have significant or multiple aesthetic issues with their neck, a surgical neck lift procedure offers the most effective and comprehensive way to address these concerns. Often, the neck lift is performed with a facelift to more uniformly rejuvenate the entire face and neck region.
