Otoplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of protruding ears. The procedure can also help to improve the overall facial appearance and improve a patient’s self-confidence.
Otoplasty allows for a repositioning of the external ears for a more cosmetic appearance. This improves the position of the ears in relation to the face so that they do not stick out so far.
Patients who have protruding ears on one or both sides may be good candidates for an otoplasty. Certain medical conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease can make you a poor candidate for elective invasive surgery. Patients should also be at least 8 years of age before electing to pursue this procedure.
Otoplasty is performed as an outpatient surgery in the operating room under general anesthesia, in which the patient goes home the same day. An incision is made behind the ear and the cartilage of the ear is adjusted to improve the shape and position of the ear. This often involves use of permanent sutures to anchor the ear in its new location.
Patients typically go home the day of surgery. As with any surgery, some discomfort is normal during the first 1 to 2 weeks; medication may be prescribed to help with this. After the initial couple of days, our patients can expect to feel better each day. Some swelling and bruising is also normal after a genioplasty, but this subsides over a few weeks. Patients may be asked to wear a protective dressing or head wrap for a couple of weeks. Most routine daily activities at home, school, and/or work can typically be resumed within 1 to 2 weeks after surgery.
Scarring for otoplasty is typically limited to behind the involved ear and is not easily appreciated.
Otoplasty is typically considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance. Our office offers a variety of payment and financing options to make access to this procedure easier for patients.
