What is a breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery enhances the shape and size of a woman’s breasts, using breast implants. Breast augmentation surgery is done to enhance the contours of the body, to correct loss of breast volume following pregnancy and breast-feeding, to make breasts symmetrical, or for other reasons. After breast augmentation surgery, a woman’s breasts can be increased by one or more cup sizes depending on the size of the breast implant used.

What are the benefits of a breast augmentation?

Often performed to restore volume lost after breast feeding, weight loss, or menopause, breast augmentation can have a dramatic impact on the aesthetics of your breasts, and therefore self-confidence. Breast implants can fill a deflated breast or enlarge the size of a smaller breast, giving the patient a more hour-glass figure.

Saline or Silicone?

We routinely perform breast augmentation surgery with either cohesive-gel silicone breast implants or with saline breast implants. The choice is made based on each person’s individual needs and desires. During your consultation with one of our surgeons, we will discuss the pros and cons of each and your surgeon will help you to make the right choice.

Am I a good candidate for a breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery is incredibly popular, and one of the most sought after forms of cosmetic surgery in the world. Provided that they’re in good health, women of all ages can be good candidate for breast augmentation. Certain medical conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease can make you a poor candidate for elective invasive surgery. Patients who smoke that are seeking a breast augmentation must also be willing to give up smoking for at least three weeks before and after their surgery.

Women of the appropriate age should have a recent mammogram before breast implants are inserted. Although breast implants do not increase the risk of breast cancer, they can make it more difficult for imaging studies to view the breast and often require additional maneuvers. For this reason, it’s important to have your breasts evaluated prior to having breast augmentation surgery.

How is a breast augmentation performed?

Our surgeons perform breast augmentation surgery under general anesthesia. Surgical incisions can either be under the breast, around the nipple, or in the axilla – with the most common being along the crease underneath the breast. Your surgeon then works through the incision to create a pocket above or below the chest muscle to accommodate the breast implant. Your surgeon will discuss these options in your consultation and review the pros and cons of each.

What is breast augmentation recovery like?

Breast augmentation is an outpatient surgery where you will go home the same day. Our team will monitor your progress closely after surgery. You may feel tired and sore for a few days, but you should be mobile in one to two days. Gauze and surgical dressing will be removed within a few days (usually within 48hrs). Any sutures that do not dissolve on their own will be removed in seven to 10 days. During the first few weeks, your nipples may experience a burning sensation. This will subside as post-surgical bruising begins to fade. Swelling after breast augmentation surgery may persist for three to five weeks with implants placed under the breast gland. In breast augmentation where the implants are placed under the muscle, swelling may persist significantly longer, approximately three to five months. It takes a few months for implants under the muscle to settle into their final place, and implants can appear to be high until they have settled.

Most patients return to work a few days after breast augmentation surgery, depending on the amount of activity their job requires. During the first two to three weeks, your breasts will be very sensitive to direct stimulation. If your breasts are no longer sore after three to four weeks, breast contact should be fine. No heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling with the upper body is recommended for at least four weeks after breast augmentation surgery. We discourage any activity that causes an increase in your heart rate or blood pressure for the first two weeks.

What will the scarring look like?

Surgical incisions can either be under the breast, around the nipple, or in the axilla – with the most common options being along the crease underneath the breast. Although the scars are typically small (less than 2 inches), they will appear pink and firm for several weeks. They may appear to widen or remain the same size for several months. They will eventually fade, though they will not disappear completely.

Will I still be able to breastfeed?

Yes, typically patients who undergo breast augmentation are still able to breast feed after surgery. There are several factors that can impact a woman’s ability to breast feed however, and this can be discussed at your consultation.

Will my breasts also be lifted during an augmentation?

Typically adding volume through a breast implant provides some amount of automatic lift to the nipple areolar complex of the breast. Still, depending on the shape and size of a patient’s breast prior to surgery, the lift obtained from an implant alone may not be sufficient to place the nipple in the ideal aesthetic position on the breast. Your surgeon’s examination and discussion will help to determine if you need a breast lift in addition to the augmentation.

Are there options for breast augmentation without implants?

Yes! Some women are looking for a small to moderate increase in the volume of their breasts and are not interested in having a foreign body such as a breast implant. In these women, our surgeons can off a breast augmentation using their own fat. Fat is harvested via liposuction techniques from other areas of the body, and then transferred to the breast to increase the volume in the breast. One the fat that is transferred has fully taken, the increased volume is permanent. This fat transfer procedure can be a great alternative for some women, and one of our surgeons will be happy to discuss it with you further.
