What is a rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgery performed to reshape the nose. The surgery can be performed via an open or closed technique. It involves the manipulation of nasal skin, soft tissue, cartilage, and bone.

What are the benefits of a rhinoplasty?

The nose has a major effect on one’s facial appearance and a rhinoplasty procedure is a powerful tool to change the look of the nose. If a patient has a prominent nasal “hump”, it can be shaved down. If the patient has a bulbous tip, it can be made smaller. If there is deviation in the nose to one side, it can be made more straight. Additionally, manipulation of the nasal septum (or septoplasty) can be performed at the time of surgery which can help improve breathing.

Am I a good candidate for a rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty surgery is one of the most sought after forms of cosmetic surgery in the world. Provided that they’re in good health, any woman or man of adult age is a suitable candidate. Certain medical conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease can make you a poor candidate for elective invasive surgery.

How is a rhinoplasty performed?

Our surgeons perform rhinoplasty surgery under general anesthesia. In the closed technique surgical incisions are typically made within the internal nasal lining and not on the skin. There is no external scar.  In the open technique, in addition to the internal nasal lining incisions, a small incision is made in the columella, the portion of the nose between the nostrils.

Whether a closed or open technique is used, it is through the access incisions that the nasal soft tissue, cartilage, and bone are manipulated. Cuts are made to reshape cartilage and bone and some of the cartilage material that is cut away can be used as graft material to enhance certain aspects of the nose.

The incisions internally are closed with dissolving sutures and in the open technique the external sutures are removed at 1 week.

What is rhinoplasty recovery like?

A rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgery where you will go home the same day. Our team will monitor your progress closely after surgery. You may feel tired and sore for a few days, but you should be mobile in one to two days. Gauze packing within the nose will be removed 24 hours after surgery. Internal and external nasal splints remain in place.

After one week, all splints are removed. There is initial bruising and swelling that clears after a few weeks and then more subtle, residual nasal swelling that takes 6 months to a year to completely dissipate.

What will the scarring look like?

In the closed technique there is no perceptible scar. In the open technique, a very small scar on the columella is well concealed.

Do you perform liquid rhinoplasty?

Yes. This technique is nonsurgical and involves using injectable fillers to reshape contour defects in the nose. This is a temporary measure as the fillers eventually dissolve. Rhinoplasty surgery, on the other hand, results in a permanent change.
