What is a genioplasty?

Genioplasty is a surgical procedure performed to improve the shape and projection of the chin. This can be done with either the placement of a chin implant, or with repositioning of the bone of the chin. This can allow for an improved cosmesis of the jaw and face with improved overall facial aesthetics and harmony.

What are the benefits of a genioplasty?

The chin plays an important role in the shape and appearance of the jaw, as well as the entire lower face. This can also have an impact on the aesthetics of the overall face and facial proportions, especially in profile view. Genioplasty therefore allows for an individualized approach to improve a patient’s facial proportions and appearance.

Am I a good candidate for a genioplasty?

Patients who have an under-projecting chin may be good candidates for a genioplasty. Certain medical conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease can make you a poor candidate for elective invasive surgery. Patients who smoke that are seeking a genioplasty must also be willing to give up smoking for at least three weeks before and after their surgery.

How is a genioplasty performed?

Genioplasty is performed as an outpatient surgery in the operating room under general anesthesia, in which the patient goes home the same day. Depending on the technique utilized, an implant may be placed through an incision inside the mouth or under the chin. Alternatively, an incision may be made in the mouth to access the bone of the chin and this can be repositioned and secured with a plate and screws.

What is a genioplasty recovery like?

Patients typically go home the day of surgery. As with any surgery, some discomfort is normal during the first 1 to 2 weeks; medication may be prescribed to help with this. After the initial couple of days, our patients can expect to feel better each day. Some swelling and bruising is also normal after a genioplasty, but this subsides over a few weeks. Patients may be asked to be on a special diet for a brief time to avoid disrupting of the intraoral incisions. Most routine daily activities at home, school, and/or work can typically be resumed within 1 to 2 weeks after surgery.

What will the scarring look like?

If an external incision is used underneath the chin, there will be a small scar which is typically not appreciated unless looking underneath the jaw. Intraoral incisions are not appreciable from the outside.

Are there good nonsurgical options for genioplasty?

Injectable fillers can provide some volume in the chin and jawline to help improve the cosmetic appearance of the lower face. While this approach can be effective for small changes, it is temporary and requires maintenance. Surgery remains the most effective way for permanent improvement of the shape and projection of the chin.
